In a group of ten, we had to identify the environmental-community related issue in our local community today. The issues had to be genuine and any solution that we provided must have an impact to the environment and community. The record of our observation could be in the form of written, video or visual. The objective of this project was to immerse ourselves in the experiences and exploring the sense of environmental and community engagement as future designers. For this project, we chose Destiny Starting Point 2, which is a home for the troubled and neglected children as well as orphans that range from the age of few months old infant to 18 years old.

There are many ways in which designers experience a community. The purpose of this project was to further develop our community skills. By working in a team of 10, we were given the opportunity to deepen our team work abilities. We had to create and adapt strategies that benefit the community. These skills are crucial in our ability to develop good professional design practice in the future. Therefore, in participating in this project we were asked not only to engage with the theme, but also to embrace, examine and reflect on the notions of community as its active member.

Through this interactive project, we were able to gain a deeper understanding of the environmental issues and our responsibility to the community, as well as having the opportunity to practice solving real-world challenges using creative ideas. Over all, this experience has taught me alot and gave me a new insight of life. Be it good or bad, I have learnt to appreciate and be more grateful of what I have now. I have also learnt to be more postive through the lives of these little children.

Environmental Sustainable Design

Project 2 - Nature & Us

In a group of two, we were assigned to complete an original journal following our site visit to Taman Negara. The journal was a summation of our observation and interpretation from the site visit. We had to write the issues related to the built environment, nature and human communities based on one of these topics, which are 'NATURE AS COMMUNITY', 'GETTING BACK TO NATURE' OR 'GETTING NATURE BACK', or 'UNIFIED NATURE'. We also had to write our own individual reflective essay by drawing inspiration from the activities carried out during the entire site visit. The objective of our project was to increase awareness of current environmental issues locally and globally and to explore the local and global context of growth.

From this project, I have learnt to recognize the effect of growth on the environment and was able to explore the concept of environmental and ecological sustainability. Besides, I was also able to identify the current environmental circumstances and issues that we are facing today. As an architect, we should learn to recognize the role and responsibility towards the environment and society. In addition, the experience that I have gained from the site visit to Taman Negara was definitely an eye opener for me. I have learn and gain a great deal of knowledge about the flora and fauna In Malaysia. As a result, It has also thought me well to appreciate the environment more as they are the main contributing factor to the balance ecosystem today. Overall, we must learn to preserve and conserve what we have left of the natural environment.
