To be an Architect

In this module, we are ask to choose a building with GBI rating as our case study. We've decide to choose Sime Darby idea house as our studies. Sime Darby idea house features different kind of passive cooling design. We focus on the shading devices, which is the overhang roof and ventilation, stack and cross ventilation. In this module we are able to understand: 

 

• To identify and define the principles of heat transfer in relation to building and also people.

• Discussion of the factors relating to thermal comfort and the understanding of thermal comfort.

• To analyze the effect of thermal comfort factors in a peron and in a space.

• To be able to criticize design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by refering to GBI, MS1525 and UBBL.

 

 

From this project, I learnt to research on particular types of shading devices: overhang roof and natural ventilation of a residence in a tropical climate. This project tested our application of learning the theories of thermal comfort and analysing them in real life buildings in order to understand it better. It also required us to pick up new software skills such as Ecotect and Vasari in order to collect the data needed for our explanations. Overall, it was a new experience for my teammates and I as it required not only our analytical mind but also teamwork. It was at quite hard at first but somehow we manage to pull it off thanks to the guidance of our lecturer, Ms. Suja.
