Project 2 : Site Analysis and Concept Development

For Project 2, we had to do a thorough analysis on Pulau Besar, in both intuitive and personal ways in order to understand our site better. For example, the circulation, human culture, vegetation and etc. After completing the analysis, we had to come up with a design concept and ideas for the a Visitor's interpretive Centre on Pulau Besar.  Besides, we also had to draw ideas from the interpretive sketches we did on the Island.

For my learning outcome,  I have learnt to interpret and understand  a site better. This project has taught me not only to depend on our sight but to look beyond what we see and use our other senses instead. I have come to realise that a good design does not just come from a particular object but from one's understanding of the culture and surrounding environment of a site. All these contributes to generating new ideas and good concept that is both convincing and meaningful.

Project 3 : Visitor Interpretive Centre

Project 3 is basically a continuation of Project 2, where we had to come up with skecthes, desgin concept and massing of the Interpretive Visitor's Centre for Pulau Besar. In project 3, we had to further develop the ideas and design of not only the form but also the interior spatial experiance. In addition, the exterior should depict the spirit of Pulau Besar and the interior space arrangement should be able to tell a story in a peotic manner as well. The main objective of the Visitor's Centre is to serve as a One-stop place for the public to enquire information about the island as well as a gallery that expresses the culture, history, and essence of Pulau Besar. Visitors should feel inspired and informed  in ways that somehow expresses the spirit of Pulau Besar.

Over the course of executing this project, I was able to gain a new insight on ways to express my design well based on a particular site, taking into consideration of each elements that a site posses , be it whether seen, heard or smell. Even a slight difference can make a place more special and unique than others. I was able to grow and be inspired by the not only the natural environment on the island but also by the people, culture, history and legends about the Island. All of these have thought me well again to use all my five senses when it comes to designing a form and space for any place, function or people.

Project 1 : Memorial themes 'Journey of the five senses'

In a group of five, we had to design two memorial themed 'Journey of the Five Senses' by using two contrasting spatial types, which are concentric and linear. For this project we had to draw our inspiration not just from the narrative of the events but also from the precedent studies according to the spatial types. For our precedent studies, we chose La Rotonde de la Villette, Paris and The Contemporary Art Centre Cordoba, Spain. The memorial we designed was specially dedicated to the MH370 incident and the Korean Ferry Tragedy.

From this project, I have come to understand better the different types of spatial space and ways of designing and arranging the spatial experience that tells a story.  I have learnt not to just rely on my sight but also on other factors that can contribute to a great spatial experience such as smell, touch etc. Overall, I have gain a new insight and improve on my designing skills. This will definitely come in handy in the near future.
