To be an Architect
Project 2: Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure
In a group of 5 or 6, we had to propose 3 buildings that have combination of skeletal, solid and surface construction. After thorough research on the buildings, we finally decided on Burj-Al Arab.
For Project 2, we had to build a model based on the buidling that shows the different structural systems and completing a full report on the types of structural systems that were used for the building. Our task was to understand how a solid structure and surface structure reacts under loading. We had to demonstrate a convincing understanding of how the solid construction and surface construction works.
Besides, we also had to Identify the basic structural systems in construction and differentiate the skeletal, solid as well as surface construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on structural elements.
Overall, we were able to recognize and apply the implications of Construction System in our design. All these knowledge we have learn from a single building has taught me alot and I believe will cotribute a great deal in my future assignment and projects.
Project 1: Skeletal Construction “A Shelter For One”
In a group of five, we had to learn on how to apply the construction system in the design of our 1:1 scale model of a Shelter. We had recognize the implication of the construction systems in our design. Throughout the whole process of building the shelter, we manage to analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including the modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.
All this was was based on our research of the existing structures of real live building construction nowadays. By utilising the same knowledge, that was how we were able to succesfully build a stable and strong shelter that can withstand not only human load but is also weatherproof.
Overall, this project has taught me to understand better about the skeletal structures and its relevant structural components as well as how a skeletal structure reacts under loading.
