To be an Architect
Project 1 - Case Study Paper
Project 1 is an individual project, whereby we had to choose one architectural building listed down by our lecturers. The building that I chose was the S11 House. For this project, I had to identify the research areas and specific scope of study which I want to focus on. For example, materials, architectural elements, tropical Architecturce, Sustainable Architecture and so on. As for me, I chose Sustainable Building Materials. I had to investigate through my observation during site visit as well as from my readings on contemporary sustainable design practices and Architectural issues in Asia.
The objectives of this project are as follow:
a) To integrate architectural design and research through a specific case study, supporting students’ design through extensive research within the framework of sustainability design in Asia.
b) To introduce students to activities which culminate in the production of the study; collection, indexing and evaluation of information; analysis of information; compilation and organization of study; writing of study; assembly of illustration and text; design of layout; binding and presentation.
For Project 1A, I needed to create a concept mapping to highlight the specific topic/ issues/significance of study and scope of study. The concept mapping included the proposed research title and research questions, to give an overview of the proposed case study paper. From the first project submission, I was able to gain a deeper understanding on the topic of 'Sustainable Building materials' and the overall general application of such materials into the S11 House through the construction of concept mapping and research objectives, questions and data in the form of a table. The research and data also gave me an insight on the architectural issues faced in Asia today. Alot of the solutions can actually be found through these study, while using the S11 House as the prime example of an ideal residential sustainable architecture.

Project 1b
For project 1B, I needed to compile all the data collected regarding the topic of 'Sustainable building materials on S11 House' and present them in a brief form of slideshow. The overall content of the slideshow gives a general overview of the entire research report.

Project 1c
Project 1C is the final report submision. Overall, I have gain alot of information and understanding about the idea and importance of sustainable and recycled building materials in architecture today. The outcome or result from using such materials can benefit not just the environment but the community as well. Reseraching this topic has also helped me understand better the meaning of sustainable architecture and gave me a sense of awareness toward the design of buildings. Thus, I ve learn and understand the certain architectural design issues face in Asia today via this project. Below is the link to the final case study report.
In a group of 6 members, we had to choose an architectural site in asia and take pictures of the site. Each member was required to take at least 10 photos with a brief caption and description for respective photos. All the photos will then be compile in a photobook with brief introduction about the history of the site as well as a hand drawn A3 size map of the chosen site. The site that we chose was Chulia Street, Penang, which is one of the four oldest streets in Penang Island today, created by Francis Light during his rule in the 19th century.
From this proejct, I have also manage to do research on the history of penang and Chulia street. As a result, Ive come to understand the significance of its culture and history, which has contributed much to its existence today. Chulia street has gone through a series of changes through the timeline of history and development over the years. Due to the different colonisation and changes in economy over the century, much has change since the beginning when Chulia Street just started out. Some of the architectural elements on the shop lots were improved and renovated by different owners that came and go from China, India and even Britain. Even till today, many of the shoplots still exist and has been awarded by the UNESCO World Heritage. Besides, some of the century old buildings are still conserve and are well taken care of due to its rich history and culture. Hence, this has taught me to appreciate the importance of conserving the old so that the younger future generations, like ourself, will also be able to enjoy the sight as well as personally experience these beautiful sculpted architecture.
