Project 1

We were required to identify and understand our 'Self' more. After that, we were given a task to do an interpretive work about ourselves using whatsoever medium to represent us. For example, singing, drawing etc. As for me, I had decided on building a 3D model instead. The reson why I chose a round object as my form is because I'm into organic shapes. Also, the shape was also to represent the earth. The round shape ball was paint with galaxy colors & then cut to half so that I could build my personal space inside it. I then use satay sticks sprayed with black paint to encircle the space inside it like a lock cage. Besides, I also placed a few natural elements into the cage like grass,& dry hay.

Overall, the interpretation is to show my self lock in my own world. Since from a young age, I have often feel chained and lock away from freedom. At times, it aches me to limit myself because of my past, but it also is reassuring at the same time as no one can touch or hurt me. However, if i continue to isolate myself, I know that one day it will lead to a negative effect. From this project, I have understand myself more and learn to not limit myself. Ive also learn to explore deeper when it comes to design. From this project, I learn that in Order to come up with a design, it has to have a reason behind it or else it would be just a meaningless art work.

Project 2

After completing the whole identifying our 'self' in project 1, we were then group together in a number of 3 people. This next project was somewhat related to our first one. This time, we were required to expand the interpretation of self & to expressed spatially by building a 1:1 scale form and space installation. My teammates and I decided to combine our personalities together to come up with the design.

At first we decided to build our own individual mock-up model so that we could combine our designs later on. In the end, we came up with a 3/4 triangular shape pyrmid design. Within the form, one can stand and sneek a peek of the outside world from the cracks of hole that were cut. The vertical and horizontal cut lines of holes on the walls are to represent Social network that connects us with one another the world. Example of social networks are like Facebook, Twitter etc. Our model is to represent us in this 21st century when almost evryone is link together through the social media. Because of that, people can communicate with one another in the comfort of their own home. Consequently, people are no longer communicate with one another face to face which which eventually leads to loneliness. This is why our design was purposely made to be sealed up to represent that isolation and depression.

From this project, I have to learn to build objects in the right scale that is proportionate to the human scale as space was design for human. I had to constanly remind my self of the purpose of the space so as to not be sidetrack too much into the abstract meaning but to instead focus on the design principles.

Project 3

For this project, we were placed in a group of 5. Then we had to chose 1 movie out of 4 movies given by our lecturer, which are The Fifth element, Steamboy, Ghost in the Shell & Blade Runner. The movie that we chose was The Fifth Element. The next task was to choose a site in the movie and to build a 1:50 scale model based on the site. Once that was completed, we were then assigned with the final assignment, which was to be done individually. For the final assignment, we were required to a choose a site from our 1:50 city model, and then build a 1:50 form and space for a character in the movie. The character that I chose was Leeloo. She is one of the significant and main characters in the movie.

Based on the movie and research that I've done on Leeloo, I've slowly come to understand her more. Because of that, I was able to gain inspiration for my design. The idea was originally just a seed, and then I slowly develop it into a form and space that was just meant for Leeloo. The seed was to represent Leeloo, young, vulnerable & fragile but plays a big role in giving hope and life to the world. I have also incorporate the four elements into the design, which is water, earth, wind & fire. The three metal sheets entwinning the seed symbolises the wind, water and fire element becuase they are agile and are not fix medium. While the tree,& grass in the seed symbolises the earth element which are solid. All this ideas came together to form Leeloo's space.

In the process of designing the space, I also managed to incorporate some design principles into it. For instant, Hierarchy, Rhythm, Symmetry Repetition etc. The tough part about this project was the orthographic drawing as well as when building the physical 3D model. It took me days of sleepless nights to comple it. Even so, all of it was worth the sacrifice as the end product was to my satisfaction.
